need to
match the device physics to the algorithm can make simple hardware look very
powerful if you cant, then it wont
olfaction
generalist system
function: to identify properties of objects
c. 1000 receptor types
odorant dominanted by single molecule type
response of one receptor cell type not indicative of an object
ratios of intensities
various problems
having 1000 receptor types (rather than 3, as in colour
allows you to use statistical algorithms
but then why dont we have 1000 colour receptors???
because you need one per pixel, presumably
because the intensity of a smell can vary, they need to compare the ratios of different receptors, rather than the total of any one receptor
when you find a neat solution, youll be able to reuse it
olfaction has a stretchable dimension (intensity), as duration of utterance is a problematic stretch dimension for audio
